WEBVTT 00:02.934 --> 00:05.267 ^(whooshing) 00:08.133 --> 00:10.301 ^- I was born into a military family. 00:10.301 --> 00:13.904 ^My father was Navy, I have family in all five branches. 00:13.904 --> 00:15.988 ^It was a very natural thing for me to grow up 00:15.988 --> 00:17.298 and join the military. 00:17.298 --> 00:20.788 It just so happened that I joined the Air Force. 00:20.788 --> 00:23.621 (energetic music) 00:30.349 --> 00:32.191 I bought the flag on my first deployment 00:32.191 --> 00:34.649 to a small nation called Qatar. 00:34.649 --> 00:37.428 I was an A1C, just starting my Air Force career, 00:37.428 --> 00:40.864 and this flag has been with me ever since. 00:40.864 --> 00:44.754 When people retire, they get a flag, they receive a flag, 00:44.754 --> 00:46.105 and that flag is supposed to be 00:46.105 --> 00:48.920 representative of their military service, 00:48.920 --> 00:50.921 but they get it at the very end. 00:50.921 --> 00:54.686 There's no real story behind that particular flag. 00:54.686 --> 00:57.431 When I joined the Air Force, I was only at home station 00:57.431 --> 00:59.521 for about two months before I deployed. 00:59.521 --> 01:01.892 So my first deployment, I picked up this flag, 01:01.892 --> 01:03.528 and I wanted it to be significant, 01:03.528 --> 01:04.754 something that I could take with me, 01:04.754 --> 01:05.587 wherever I'm stationed, take with me 01:05.587 --> 01:07.920 on every deployment and TDY, 01:08.228 --> 01:10.395 and it would have a story. 01:12.523 --> 01:14.964 This last summer I was able to take a trip with my family. 01:14.964 --> 01:16.905 we went out to Fort McHenry, 01:16.905 --> 01:19.974 and I wanted a picture of this flag at Fort McHenry 01:19.974 --> 01:24.141 in front of a sign, in front of some historic marker. 01:24.230 --> 01:26.068 Fort McHenry, of course, is where Francis Scott Key 01:26.068 --> 01:29.818 wrote the national anthem in the War of 1812. 01:30.118 --> 01:31.672 I asked one of the staff members, 01:31.672 --> 01:33.801 I said "Hey, what's a historical marker 01:33.801 --> 01:36.332 I can take a picture with this flag in front of?" 01:36.332 --> 01:39.117 And he leans over, and he goes "Hey Jim, 01:39.117 --> 01:41.323 these people wanna fly their flag!" 01:41.323 --> 01:42.796 So this guy comes running out, 01:42.796 --> 01:46.154 and he goes "Oh wow, okay. Let's go to the flagpole. 01:46.154 --> 01:48.115 Here help me hoist it up." 01:48.115 --> 01:49.831 So I was able to fly the flag 01:49.831 --> 01:52.498 on the flagpole at Fort McHenry. 01:53.027 --> 01:55.649 That was where the national anthem was written. 01:55.649 --> 01:57.656 There's so much history there. 01:57.656 --> 02:00.230 People died defending that fort. 02:00.230 --> 02:03.554 It was something to the effect of a 24-hour bombardment 02:03.554 --> 02:06.745 by British vessels, and it was an American victory. 02:06.745 --> 02:09.745 And here I was, able to fly my flag. 02:09.809 --> 02:13.392 It's still the same flag, it's a U.S. flag, 02:13.820 --> 02:16.560 fewer stripes and a lot more stars, 02:16.560 --> 02:20.687 but I was able to fly my flag on that historic flagpole. 02:20.687 --> 02:22.604 It was pretty humbling.
