BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. -- Bomber Airmen,
This year marks the 150th observance of Memorial Day. On Monday, American flags around the world will be lowered to half-staff in honor of over 1 million servicemen and women who laid down their lives in service to our nation. It is our duty as Americans, living free, to remember and honor those who gave all in defense of that freedom.
Memorial Day began shortly after the Civil War which claimed more lives than any conflict in our history. While our nation was mourning, the small town of Waterloo, New York responded by holding memorial gatherings to remember the fallen. Their tradition of honoring those who gave their life in service spread throughout the nation, ultimately becoming a National Holiday.
Our country has continued to lose our sons and daughters since the Civil War. The Mighty Eighth has been no exception. Since our inception 75 years ago, we have lost over 26,000 Airmen in battle. We must never forget them, nor the countless other Soldiers, Sailors, and Marines, active, reserve, and civilians who demanded nothing and gave everything.
On Monday, Barb and I join each of you in honoring these brave men and women who gave the last full measure of devotion. I am amazed every day at the contributions each of you make knowing well the history of our command – but history merely tells us where we’ve been. Our heritage stems from the courage and fire of thousands of Airmen just like you who answered the call to serve. That heritage makes us proud to be a part of the Mighty Eighth and it is what makes me proud to serve alongside each of you.
Very Respectfully,
Tom
Maj. Gen. Thomas Bussiere, Eighth Air Force commander
