Remember to practice safety this holiday season Published Dec. 21, 2009 By Maj. Gen. Floyd L. Carpenter Commander, 8th Air Force BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. -- The traditions of the upcoming holiday season turn our thoughts to those whom we love and want to spend time with. We will travel great distances to be with family and friends and sometimes can hardly wait to get on the road to ensure we are there by Christmas or New Year's Eve. We rack our brains trying to decide on the perfect gift for that special someone. However, the best gift you can take home doesn't exist at the BX or the mall. You cannot buy it with cash or put it on a credit card. In fact, this gift is too great to have any monetary value attached to it. The gift is you! The gift of arriving at your destination safe and unharmed. Undoubtedly, this year some will not be able to deliver that gift because of poor planning and careless decisions. Please, do not rob others of this precious gift. Conduct careful trip planning, consider the distance and driving conditions, and budget your time wisely. Drive defensively and remember alcohol and driving are a deadly combination that has robbed so many families of their most precious gift. See you after the holidays! Melissa and I wish each of you and your families a safe and happy holiday season.
