The 67 NWW Fitness Program -- We Don't Provide a Service...We Provide Results!

On 3 October 2008, at 0700, the 67th Network Warfare Wing commanded by Colonel Bradford J. Shwedo, held its inaugural Wing Run, one in a series of events that celebrate its war-fighting fitness and readiness. The "life-blood of the Wing," built on the success and efficiency of today's "high-tech" Air Force, is dependent upon the physical fitness of its Airmen and a culture that encourages regular exercise and the promotion of an environment critical to military operations in the 21st Century. Therefore, the requirement to defend this nation and its global interests by performing military operations, whenever, where ever, and for any length of time, by Air Force members is tied directly to the implementation of a premier fitness program. As a result, our Airmen are expected to develop all areas of fitness to include muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, body composition, as well as, cardiovascular fitness. Similarly, just as the Air Force evaluates its weapon systems to perform at maximum capacity under an austere resource environment, the same approach should be taken against its fitness program responsible for taking care of the Air Force's most precious asset--"the Airman." This is how the 67 NWW answers that call...we don't' provide a service, we provide results!

Upon sunrise, more than 190 Airmen and civilians assigned to the Wing Staff, the Network Warfare Group, Network Operations Group, and Network Support Group took to the Gillum field on the top of Security Hill at Lackland AFB to stand in formation to receive welcoming comments from the commander, an event overview and a safety briefing. These comments were followed by warm-up exercises consisting of dynamic stretching techniques and calisthenics in preparation for completing a tough 2-Mile run replete with numerous uphill climbs and trails from a preexisting golf course. Not to fail, the 67 NWW warriors personified the war-fighter ethos through it all. Over and over they demonstrated the Wingman Concept by going back and ensuring NO AIRMAN WAS LEFT BEHIND.

Although only 60 years young, the Air Force continues to embrace the spirit of one of its founding fathers, the Commanding General of the Army Air Corps, General "Hap" Arnold who stated, "No man expects to live for-ever. But the man in perfect physical condition will live longer, especially in combat." He went on to suggest, "... if you are not in top physical condition, they may knock hell out of you. It's as simple as that."

Therefore, being prepared and ready is, and should be, at the heart of all Air Force fitness programs. Our fitness program is no exception. At the end of the Wing Run, recognition was bestowed upon the "Top 10" fastest warriors and coins were presented to members having earned "Excellent" PT scores within the last two quarters. It was an event that demonstrated that we, as "Hap" Arnold put it are ready to "knock the hell" out of our enemy...the Wing Run was a resounding success!
