Mighty Eighth performs retreat ceremony on historic day

BOSSIER CITY, La. - Members of Headquarters Eighth Air Force stand in formation before the Headquarters Eighth Air Force retreat ceremony at the Cyber Innovation Center in Bossier City, La., Nov. 3, 2010, to commemorate the day in Eighth Air Force history. On Nov. 3, 1943, Eighth Air Force dispatched more than 500 B-17 Flying Fortresses and B-24 Liberators to Wilhelmshaven, a German port along the North Sea, with the primary mission of striking U-boat construction yards in the area. This was the first “500 bomber strike” conducted by Eighth Air Force and the mission showcased the growing air power of the “Mighty Eighth” and highlighted its innovation spirit in employing new technology in combat.
