U.S. Fifth-Generation Fighters, Strategic Bombers Conduct Show of Force with Allies in Response to North Korea Missile Launch
Two U.S. Marine Corps F-35B Lightning II stealth fighters assigned to the Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan drop munitions over Pilsung Range, South Korea, along with Republic of Korea F-15K, Aug. 30, 2017. This mission was conducted with U.S. B-1B Lancers and F-16 Fighting Falcons in a direct response to North Korea’s intermediate range ballistic missile launch, which flew directly over northern Japan on Aug. 28, 2017 amid rising tension over North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missile development programs.
